The Planet Grief. An incalculable number of light years from the warmth of the sun. When the rain falls, it falls in droplets of grief, and when the light shines, it is in waves and particles of grief. From whatever direction the wind blows–south, east, north or west– it blows cinders of grief before it. Grief stings your eyes and sucks the breath from your lungs. No oxygen on this planet, no nitrogen; the atmosphere is composed entirely of grief. [By the Time You Read This, page 37]
Catherine Cardinal, wife of Sergeant John Cardinal, is dead. Ruled a suicide, it comes as no real surprise to those who knew her. Catherine had suffered from manic depression for over twenty years. Long stints of hospitalization were followed by healthy periods permeated by worry and anxiousness that everything would once again disintegrate. Her last hospital stay had been over a year ago. Catherine had been finding peace and fulfillment in her photography and taking her medication regularly. From years of experience, Cardinal had taken all of these signs to be positive and hopeful.
So along with coping with devastating grief, Cardinal is confused. Although a suicide note in Catherine’s handwriting was found at the scene, Cardinal isn’t convinced that his wife was responsible for her own death. She was distracted when she left to take pictures the night she died, but she was nowhere near the despondent state she attained when she was ill. It wasn’t adding up.
Everyone in the department, even his partner, Lise Delorme, believes Cardinal’s refusal to accept his wife’s suicide is only the denial that comes with the agony of his loss. Even his daughter, Kelly, has accepted her mother’s fate. But when Cardinal receives a card with a typewritten note inside taunting him about his wife’s death, he is resolute that someone has murdered Catherine.
In Cardinal’s line of work, a man can pile up a lot of enemies. The first likely suspect that comes to his mind is Kiki B., an “associate” of a drug dealer, Rick Bouchard, who he had sent to prison. Kiki B. knew where Cardinal lived and he had an axe to grind–Bouchard had been killed while serving his sentence.
With Delorme wrapped up in a nasty sex crimes case, Cardinal goes it alone. When Kiki B. turns out to have made a career change, Cardinal moves on to other members of the criminal element he’d had the pleasure to put away. As he moves through a long line of suspects, Cardinal finds himself settling on perhaps the most unlikely suspect of all.

By the Time You Read This The John Cardinal Crime Series eBook Giles Blunt Reviews
This series of novels involving John Cardinal and Lise Delorme just gets better. A deadly event in this story brings out a lot of emppathy for one of the main characters but it is something most readers have probably been expecting for the last couple of books. I like the very lean prose and the way Mr. Blunt develops the story. The setting is a small town in Canada which adds something more personal to the novels. I hope the author continues this series. Highly recommended.
Let me start by saying that I am a fan of Giles Blunt. I admire the intelligence of his work, as well as the subtle characterizations of Cardinal and Delorme. That said, I believe there is a persistent issue in his novels that mars them, and keeps them from being great Simply put, Blunt needs an editor. His books are like a sandwich with too many toppings--bulky, unwieldy, and a bit slow to finish. Blunt feels the need to give us long expositions on the backgrounds of his villains. These discussions add nothing to the plot other than to slow it down. Likewise the overly long discussions of entomology and DNA in Blackfly Season seemed to want to show the reader how much scholarship he had done, again without adding to the story. Finally, the relish he takes in describing his villains' ghoulish misdeeds also tends to go to excess. Again, I like Blunt. I just think he could get some addition through subtraction
He has become one of my favorite crime writers. I would recommened starting at the begining of the series. They all take place in the same small town in Canada. Very well put together. Totally believable. Don't hesitate, l think you'll like them all.
I love his books and this one was a true mystery because you aren't sure if a crime was committed while Lise DeLorme undertakes her own odyssey.
It was a well written book and I was interested to finish it, however, I chose it because all the reviews said that it was full of surprise twists - while I enjoyed the originality of the plot, I didn't find it particularily surprising.
For fans of Giles Blunt and his north woods detective John Cardinal, the apparent suicide of Cardinal's long suffering wife Catherine comes as no huge surprise. With Catherine having spent much of Blunt's three previous novels in and out of psychiatric wards, the crime scene investigators of Ontario's Algonquin Bay have little reason to suspect foul play in Catherine's fatal dive off a nine-story building. But the distraught Cardinal is not so sure, and embarks on a grief-ridden one-man crusade to get to the bottom of his wife's death.
There is no question that Blunt has talent, and "By the Time You Read This" starts with an intriguing premise set in this poignant backdrop. The author does a good job of capturing the pain of Cardinal and daughter Kelly without getting maudlin, and renders a credible portrait of Cardinal's dealings with his colleagues during this difficult time. Seemingly unconnected subplots involving a child pornography ring and the shotgun suicide of a local college student provide additional depth and deflect some focus from Cardinal's pain, and provide some context to keep detective Lise Delorme in the story. And Blunt adds finds some interesting new dimensions to add to the crime scene forensics. So far so good. But about halfway through the book, the plot starts showing some strain, and has thinned to the point that with nearly 100 pages left to go, the outcome, if unbelievable, is virtually inevitable. In setting up this complex and suspenseful thriller, it feels like Blunt got a few too many threads running in too many directions, and had to rush to reach a neat and tidy climax which instead felt forced, lacking the credibility promised in the opening chapters.
All in all, an average read from Blunt - better than "The Delicate Strom" but not up to the "Silence of the Lambs"-class depravity of "Forty Words for Sorrow", or the tightly wound "Blackfly Season". With the paperback due next month, you may want to wait for it and save a few bucks.
I enjoyed this book. Although the "whodunit" becomes apparent quite earlier than one would expect, Giles Hunts masterful storytelling keeps the readers' interest going as Cardinal goes against everyone to find out the truth.
Giles Blunt is a good writer but he does not know how to craft a good mystery- I knew whodunit very early in the book-so disappointing.
